With the growing pressure on Earth’s natural resources, it is of paramount importance to design products with a good intent and specific purpose. We do not want to contribute to over-production and unnecessary waste generation by making products that are used only a few times and then left unused or discarded. Rather, companies should aim to produce items that are fully appreciated and used actively a maximum number of times throughout their lifetime.
Questions to be asked are:
- What purpose is the product meant to serve? Is it designed for luxury consumption, to meet an expressed desire, or to serve a functional need?
- Who will the product serve? Will it be used by a certain consumer segment, defined by socio-cultural belonging, gender, age, interest or similar? Or can it be used by almost anybody?
- How will the product be used? For example, can it be used alone or will it be used together with other items? For how long is it expected to last?
- Will it be used at a special time? Is it indended for a certain life period, part of the year, or a particular occassion?
