This article raises critical questions concerning the new concept of “ultra-fast fashion” in relation to forest-derived textile materials. In essence, the author calls for great caution among fashion and textile professionals in endorsing and promoting this concept before attempting to gain a more comprehensive understanding of our natural forests and their complex functioning. We need to recognize humanity’s inescapable dependency on their vital ecological services, in alignment with global sustainability principles. The author thus proposes that the concept “ultra-fast fashion” remains as it was originally intended, that is: “a thought-provoking idea” that encourages us to take a closer look at today’s fast fashion products and their (precious) material contents. The article ends with some suggestions on how the global transition towards a more sustainable and truly circular industry can be supported.
